In 1998, after 7 days of mayhem, Hurricane Mitch finally

dissipated.  A Category 5 hurricane, he was not only the

strongest hurricane of the 1998 Atlantic hurricane

season, but also, at the time, the strongest October

Atlantic hurricane.  He produced as much as an astounding

75 inches of rain, which no doubt caused catastrophic

flooding in Honduras, Guatemala, and Nicaragua.  The

ghastly flooding alone claimed around 11,000 lives,

making Mitch the 2nd deadliest Atlantic Basin hurricane

on record.  As of 2008, the total official death toll was

placed at 19,325.
