In 1956 New Mexico and West Texas were hit by a record

snowstorm.  Roswell received around 15 inches while 2 to

3 feet overwhelmed the Texas Panhandle.

In 2011, Australia was hit by their most powerful

cyclone on record, when Severe Tropical Cyclone Yasi

struck the northeast coast of Queensland very close to

Cairns.  The sensational cyclone, comparable to Hurricane

Katrina, produced 10-minute sustained winds around 130

mph, 1-minute sustained winds around 155 mph, and gusts

around 180 mph.  The storm surge was nearly 25 feet. 

Yasi caused around $3 billion damage but miraculously

there was only 1 fatality.
