FXUS65 KVEF 270329 AFDVEF Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Las Vegas NV 828 PM PDT Sun Oct 26 2025 .KEY MESSAGES... * Gusty west to southwest winds in the Mojave Desert will subside tonight. * Areas of breezy northerly winds are expected Monday through Wednesday, peaking on Tuesday. * Dry weather and seasonable temperatures will persist through the upcoming week. && .DISCUSSION...through Sunday. Early afternoon satellite loop showed areas of cirrus zipping by in fast west northwest flow aloft. Surface obs showed breezy southwesterly winds, with the strongest gusts of 40 to 50 mph on the eastern slopes of the Sierra, and temperatures averaging a few degrees warmer than 24 hours ago. The strongest gusts in the Mojave Desert thus far have been 35 to 40 mph in the Barstow area. Guidance is in strong agreement that desert winds will settle down between sunset and midnight as daytime heating and deeper mixing are lost. The axis of the deep mid-level trough passing by to our north will move east of us tonight, allowing surface winds to reverse to northerly. Since the parent trough is moving eastward rather than southward, strong wind potential will be limited and mostly driven by surface pressure gradients, which peak on Tuesday as surface high pressure strengthens over the northern Great Basin. Peak gusts then could reach 40 mph in the Laughlin/Bullhead City/Davis Dam area, possibly requiring a Lake Wind Advisory if the forecast gradient does not weaken by tomorrow. Weaker and less widespread winds are expected Monday and Wednesday due to weaker pressure gradients, with peak gusts around 30 mph in the Laughlin area and less areal extent of gusts over 20 mph. Aside from the aforementioned winds, quiet weather is expected for the upcoming week as high pressure builds in the wake of the departing trough. Dry weather is expected, with areas of passing high clouds, and temperatures about five to 10 degrees above late October/early November normals. && .AVIATION...For Harry Reid...For the 06Z Forecast Package...Winds will be the main concern through Monday. A weak cold front will move through the valley overnight, but at this time, winds are not expected to show much of a response. Expect southwest winds to diminish around 10z with winds becoming light and variable through 17z. It is possible that a period of northwest winds up to 7 knots will occur during that time, but it is expected to remain brief. After 17z, winds will become more northeast with the most likely scenario is for sustained speeds around eight knots, but a few gusts around 15 knots cannot be ruled out. Winds should go light and variable around sunset Monday. VFR conditions will prevail. For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast California...For the 06Z Forecast Package...Winds will be the main concern through Monday. Gusty west winds will prevail around KDAG through A weak cold front will push south through the southern Great Basin and the northern Mojave Desert tonight into Monday morning, shifting winds to a north to northeasterly direction.
