FXUS65 KVEF 091928 AFDVEF Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Las Vegas NV 1228 PM PDT Fri May 9 2025 .SYNOPSIS...Temperatures will continue to climb, peaking tomorrow. An incoming system will bring gusty winds and cooler temperatures to the early starting Sunday through the first half of next week. && .DISCUSSION...through next Friday. Afternoon temperatures will top out around 3 to 6 degrees warmer than they did yesterday. This warming trend, along with light winds and mostly sunny skies will continue through tomorrow as a ridge of high pressure builds over the southwestern US. These temperatures will bring Moderate HeatRisk (Level 2 of 4) to the valleys and lower elevations of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona, and southeastern California today and tomorrow. Death Valley and the lower elevations of the Colorado River Valley will see HeatRisk increase to Major (Level 3 of 4) on Saturday. People planning on recreating outdoors over the weekend should take proper precautions to ensure they are adequately hydrated and protected from the sun to help minimize any adverse heat impacts. A upper-level trough will approach the Pacific Northwest on Sunday, resulting in an increase in southerly to southwesterly winds across the the region. These winds will make for choppy waters on area lakes with 1 to 2 foot waves expected on Lake Mead and Lake Mohave. As this trough pushes into the Pacific Northwest we will see 500 mb heights fall slightly on Sunday. However, increased winds aloft will help us to mix, keeping temperatures from falling too quickly from Saturday into Sunday. Winds will increase further with widespread 40+ mph wind gusts expected on Monday as this trough begins to dig into the Desert Southwest. These gustier winds will linger across the Mojave Desert through southern Nevada and into northwest Arizona on Tuesday as the trough axis swings through. As you would expect, we will see temperatures drop off quickly as this system swings through. Temperatures will drop 5 to 10 degrees from Sunday into Monday, cooling an additional 10 to 15 degrees from Monday into Tuesday. This system will be much drier than the system that impacted the region last weekend, with chances for isolated showers being confined to the mountains of Inyo County and the southern Great Basin on Tuesday. Beyond Tuesday, the upper-level pattern will remain trough-y with temperatures gradually warming back up during the second half of the week. && .AVIATION...For Harry Reid...For the 18Z Forecast Package...Mainly light winds favoring a northeast direction through this afternoon with light southwest winds overnight.
