FXUS65 KSLC 272153 AFDSLC Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Salt Lake City UT 353 PM MDT Mon Oct 27 2025 .SYNOPSIS...Cold air left behind in the wake of the most recent storm system will bring generally widespread freezing temperatures outside of southern Utah. High pressure builds back into the forecast area from Tuesday onward, bringing dry and mild conditions to all of Utah and southwest Wyoming. && .DISCUSSION...Through the remainder of the evening and overnight hours, the trough associated with our most recent mountain snowfall event in the northern Utah mountains will depart the region, leaving the coldest airmass of the fall draped over the forecast area. As such, we will see generally widespread freezing temperatures as we head into Tuesday morning (with the exception of far southern Utah). For most areas, freezing temperatures have already been achieved early last week throughout at least half of the zone, however, freeze conditions will become much more widespread tonight. Additionally, freeze conditions will be seen in some of the lower elevations of Capitol Reef which have not already seen freezing temperatures. As such, a Freeze Warning remains in effect. Through the day on Tuesday, a ridge of high pressure will begin to build over the western U.S. which is expected to persist through the upcoming week. As a result of the ridge, a subsidence inversion is expected to develop across Utah which will likely aid in the accumulation of particulate matter along the urban corridor. For this reason, have maintained "haze" in the mentionable weather along the Wasatch Front through at least Wednesday evening. Ensemble guidance does, however, show potential for a shortwave trough to move through the northern Rockies region which may act to tamp down the ridge over Utah, as well as introduce a dry cold front into northern Utah and southwest Wyoming Wednesday evening. If the associated cold front becomes cold enough, temporary relief from the subsidence inversion may be seen by Thursday. That said, the aforementioned ridge quickly reestablishes Thursday forward, bringing continued dry and mild conditions across the forecast area. Upstream over the northeast Pacific/ Gulf of Alaska, an area of deep low pressure is expected to remain persistent, helping to advect a stream of moisture into the west coast of North America. Depending on the strength and orientation of the ridge, some of this moisture will have a chance at scraping by the far northern reaches of the forecast area over the weekend. Even then, this possibility is only supported by around 25% of ensemble members... so odds continue to favor a dry forecast through at least Sunday, and potential beyond as this ridge becomes the dominant weather feature over the West. && .AVIATION...KSLC...VFR conditions will persist for the KSLC terminal through the period.
