FXUS65 KSLC 031022 AFDSLC Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Salt Lake City UT 322 AM MST Tue Feb 3 2026 .KEY MESSAGES... - Building high pressure will bring dry and mild conditions for the remainder of the week. - The ridge is expected to move east of the area over the weekend, allowing for a more active pattern to develop by early next week. && .DISCUSSION...High pressure is centered over California this morning, putting Utah and southwest Wyoming under a dry north to northwest flow aloft. Thus, dry and mild conditions continue with maxes today expected to average 10F above seasonal normals. A wave moving over the top of the ridge into the central United States will bring an increase in high clouds during the day, with little if any other impacts. There is high confidence that the ridge will build and gradually shift east for the remainder of the work week. This will bring a steady warming trend for much of the area through Thursday, when the ridge axis moves overhead. The exception to this will be valleys prone to inversion conditions, where little change in temperatures is expected. The building inversions will also bring some decrease in air quality and visibility. By the weekend, the ridge is expected to make its way east of the area in response to two troughs, one over the Pacific Northwest and one over southern California, moving onshore along the Pacific coast. Though associated precipitation with these systems currently looks to be limited at best, their arrival looks to finally usher in a pattern change, with guidance showing storm systems continuing to impact the area for much of next week. Though confidence remains low in the timing, track, and associated precipitation with any individual storm system, confidence is relatively high in the overall change to a cooler and more unsettled pattern across the entire forecast area. && .AVIATION...KSLC...VFR conditions prevail over the KSLC terminal under increasing high level cloud cover. Light diurnally driven winds are expected through the forecast period, with southerly drainage flow becoming a northerly upvalley flow after 18-19Z. .REST OF UTAH AND SOUTHWEST WYOMING...VFR conditions will prevail across the area today with no surface weather concerns. High level cloud cover will spread across the northern half of Utah and southwest Wyoming through the morning. A majority of winds will be light and terrain driven, however, gusty northerly gap winds will exist in southwest Utah through the morning and afternoon hours. && .SLC WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...
