FXUS65 KREV 091923 AFDREV Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Reno NV 1223 PM PDT Fri May 9 2025 .KEY MESSAGES... * Near record temperatures will be possible in western Nevada today and on Saturday with increased heat risk concerns and renewed snowmelt runoff. * A late season storm system will bring increasing winds along with chances for mountain snowfall and valley rain showers from Sunday through Tuesday. && .DISCUSSION... Well, spring keeps on "springing" with another round of less-than- pristine weather for the weekend. Who ordered up the wind, mountain snow and rain for mother's day? I would have been fine with a coffee and a nice candle. Let's check out what we have. Warm Conditions Persist: Afternoon highs are well on pace to peak out in the mid to upper 80s, with a handful of 90s in the mix, for western NV, eastern Lassen, and the lower elevations of Mono County. For the Sierra communities, it will be warm for those areas too with values reaching into the mid 70s to low 80s. A few temperatures records may tie or be broken today with the above average projected highs. A handful of cumulus buildups may mature to produce an isolated shower or thunderstorm (5-10% chance) along for the Eastern Sierra today, very similar to yesterday. Windy Weekend: Another spring storm is forecast to arrive this weekend bringing strong, gusty winds, mountain snow and valley rains. Wind gusts will be pesky on Saturday, but increase to strong, gusty (localized gusts 60+mph) for Sunday into Monday. Wind prone areas of US-395/I-580 in western NV, northeast CA, and into Mono County each have a 60% chance for gusts of at least 50 mph or greater, with the 50th percentile maximum wind gusts of 50-60 mph. Plan on impacts to road/air travel and hazardous boating conditions for area lakes this weekend. Winds will peak for most areas on Sunday afternoon and then another burst Monday afternoon, but windy conditions may be continuous for the wind prone areas and in the mountain areas. Wet and Cold Next Week: As the spring storm slowly meanders south the wind potential dampens and precipitation potential arrives Monday through Wednesday. The best potential for wetting rains and precipitation will be in the eastern Sierra toward northeastern California in Lassen county. For areas east of Highway 395 and western Nevada the precipitation potential will be in the 30-40% range. Snow levels will be right around 6500 feet on Monday (8000 feet in the Eastern Sierra), then drop to near 5500 feet by Tuesday morning. Snow is possible on the higher Sierra passes from Monday into Tuesday, but it may struggle to accumulate on area roads following this warm round of temperatures. Between Saturday's highs to Monday's highs, we're looking at a 20-25 degree plummet from the 80s to the 60s, so be sure to keep the heavier sweaters handy. Lingering showers may meander about the Eastern Sierra and western Nevada into Wednesday afternoon before the trough deepens southward Thursday into Friday. -Edan .AVIATION... VFR conditions prevail today with typical light afternoon breezes out of the west-southwest. Isolated shower/T-storm chances will be limited to around a 5% chance along the Sierra crest during the afternoon hours today. Weekend weather will be a stark contrast to the weather so far this week. A potent spring storm arrives bringing strong, gusty winds, mountain snow and valley rains. West to southwest FL100 winds on Saturday will be around 30-40kts from Tahoe northward. FL100 winds increasing notably on Sunday with a 40-50kt range 6z-18z, with winds peaking around 60-70kts Monday 3z-12z. Mountain wave turbulence and LLWS will be a concern from Saturday afternoon through early Monday morning until FL100 begin to subside after 18z Monday. Precipitation chances return midday Monday and may persist through early Wednesday with snow possible at Sierra terminals and rain elsewhere. -Edan && .REV Watches/Warnings/Advisories... NV...None.
