FXUS65 KPIH 271713 AFDPIH Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Pocatello ID 1113 AM MDT Mon Oct 27 2025 .KEY MESSAGES... - Winter Weather Advisory continues for parts of the Eastern and Southeastern Highlands until 3 PM today. - Gusty winds of 20 to 40 mph today. - Drier and slowly warming through rest of the week. && .SHORT TERM /THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/... Issued at 207 AM MDT Mon Oct 27 2025 As our shortwave trough and cold front make their way out of Eastern Idaho today, a Winter Weather Advisory will continue for parts of the Eastern and Southeastern Highlands until 3 PM this afternoon as snow showers linger. This is where the bulk of the moisture will fall today, but we still have a few isolated showers out there in parts of the Central Mountains, South Hills, and upper Snake River Plain early this morning. As for additional snowfall, look for another 1 to 4 inches for areas above 5500 feet in the Eastern Highlands. Over in the Central Mountains/Sawtooths, only another 1 to 2 inches of snow is expected around the Galena Summit and Stanley areas. Snow levels will fall down to valley floors early this morning, but most of the precipitation will be done in those areas by then. That said, about a half inch or less of snow is possible in areas like Ashton, St. Anthony, Ririe, Wayan, and Soda Springs. In fact, the HREF shows only a 10 to 20 percent chance of those areas receiving more than a half inch of snow this morning. The wind is blowing behind this cold front, too, with gusts ranging from 20 to 40 mph for most. The strongest gusts will be in the South Hills, eastern Magic Valley, and Snake River Plain with the "lightest" winds in the lower elevations of the Central Mountains. The NBM shows about a 50 to 70 percent chance of gusts greater than 45 mph at our typical trouble windy spot near the I86/84 split. Elsewhere the chance of gusts greater than 45 mph is less than 50 percent, so will hold off on any Wind Advisory for today. Highs this afternoon will be very comparable to yesterday with most in the 30s and 40s and clearing skies as the day goes on. This will set us up for quite the chilly night/Tuesday morning as temperatures fall into the teens and 20s across all of Eastern Idaho with the potential for some patchy fog to develop through parts of the eastern Magic Valley and Snake River Plain. Tuesday will be a drier day and much less windy as high pressure slowly begins to build in over the area, but our highs won't warm much until we get to Wednesday afternoon. && .LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/... Issued at 207 AM MDT Mon Oct 27 2025 Upper ridge shifts across the region Tuesday, and ensemble clusters maintain the longwave ridge into the weekend. General temperature trend is upward throughout the week, warming from the upper 40s/lower 50s Wednesday into the upper 50s/lower 60s for daytime highs by the weekend. Weak shortwave flattens the ridge Wednesday, but minimal impact expected. Another weak shortwave arrives Friday, and while the broad ridge remains in place, there is enough uncertainty within the ensemble runs to produce light precipitation across the mountain regions of East Idaho by the weekend. && .AVIATION /18Z TAFS THROUGH 18Z TUESDAY/... Issued at 1110 AM MDT Mon Oct 27 2025 Main impact this afternoon will be lingering MVFR ceilings and gusty winds 20 to 30 knots at PIH, IDA and BYI. Expect ceilings to lift in the 19 to 20Z time frame except at SUN where VFR conditions already exist. Expect mainly clear skies after 01Z at all sites as well. Strong winds will also dies down in the 01 to 02Z time frames at the lower elevation sites. Tuesday will be excellent flying conditions at all TAF sites with much lighter winds expected. && .FIRE WEATHER... Issued at 207 AM MDT Mon Oct 27 2025 Widespread precipitation has tapered off across much of the area, but we will continue to see some rain and snow showers in FWZ 411, 413, and 427. There will be a couple of isolated showers lingering in the northern and eastern half of FWZ 410, too. The bulk of this moisture will fall within the first half of the day with the highest QPF totals around a tenth to a quarter of an inch in FWZ 411 and less than a tenth of an inch elsewhere. It will be breezy today with gusts ranging from 20 to 40 mph with the strongest gusts in the South Hills, Snake River Plain, and eastern Magic Valley. High pressure builds in for the middle of the week bringing some drier, slightly warmer weather our way. && .PIH WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...
