FXUS65 KBYZ 122202 AFDBYZ Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Billings MT 302 PM MST Fri Dec 12 2025 .KEY MESSAGES... - Hazardous winter conditions continue through Saturday morning with accumulating snow. Greatest accumulations over the plains, generally from northern Rosebud through southeast MT with up to 5 inches of additional snowfall. - Cooler conditions are expected for much of region Friday and Saturday with high temperatures in the single digits and teens (eastern MT). - Warmer and drier weather expected to return by Sunday through early next week. && .DISCUSSION... Today through Thursday... Currently, a moderate to heavy band of snow is located from Musselshell Co. down through northwest Yellowstone Co. and northern Bighorn Co. This band is expected to lift north and east through the afternoon and remain over east central MT overnight. With another push of cold air advection overnight tonight, hi-res models are in good agreement that the band will then back into south- central MT, bringing additional snowfall Saturday morning. Snow showers are expected to then dissipate early afternoon Saturday with less than an inch expected across central locations. As far as additional amounts go, Yellowstone Co. through Treasure Co. can expect up to 2 inches, with about 4-6 for east central MT and 1-3 inches for southeast MT. Continue to use caution if traveling along I-94 and HWY 212 east of Billings as heavy snow will create reduced visibilities and hazardous driving conditions. Into this evening, a weak pressure gradient and westerly 700 mb winds will allow for some gap winds at Livingston and Big Timber. There is about a 70% chance for gusts to 50 mph with about a 35% chance for gusts to 60 mph. Best timing for these winds will be late evening through the overnight hours. Late Saturday into Sunday, the region will transition into a southerly then westerly flow, allowing for warming temperatures and drying conditions. High temperatures today and Saturday will range in the 20s-30s across the western foothills to teens and single digits for the east. Sunday, temperatures will warm into the upper 30s to 50s across the region. An additional gap winds period is forecast late Monday through at least Wednesday. Additional systems pass through the north early week, but bring little in the way of precip with winds being the main impacts. A potentially stronger system looks to move through Wednesday into Thursday, but impacts will be dependent on where models have the low set up which is uncertain at this time. High temperatures will be in the 40s to low 50s Monday through Wednesday, potentially cooling into Thursday. TS .AVIATION... Moderate to heavy band of snowfall continues to move east and north of KBIL and KSHR. This band is producing MVFR to LIFR conditions and will continue through this evening, especially around KMLS and KBHK. W to SW winds will increase along the foothills west of KBIL this afternoon/evening. Gusts in the 40s knots are possible around KLVM. Low stratus and patchy fog are expected around and east of KBIL through the period. Mountains will remain obscured through the period as well. Matos && .PRELIMINARY POINT TEMP/POPS...
