FXUS64 KSJT 091939 AFDSJT Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service San Angelo TX 239 PM CDT Fri May 9 2025 ...New LONG TERM... .KEY MESSAGES... - Isolated showers and thunderstorms possible this afternoon. - Significant change to hotter temperatures early to middle next week, with dry conditions. && .SHORT TERM... (This evening through Saturday) Issued at 202 PM CDT Fri May 9 2025 Isolated showers and thunderstorms this afternoon will be ending early this evening with loss of heating. These are not expected to be severe, but brief heavy rain and lightning are possible. Gusty north winds also decrease this evening, becoming light overnight. Lows are expected in the lower to mid 50s, with a few protected/low lying areas falling into the upper 40s. Saturday will be similar to today, although north winds will be a couple mph lower. If an isolated afternoon shower does develop, it would be from Junction to Mason to San Saba, closer to the upper low in Louisiana. Highs Saturday will be in the upper 70s to near 80. && .LONG TERM... (Saturday night through next Friday) Issued at 234 PM CDT Fri May 9 2025 The main weather story in the long term will be the quick increase in temperatures next week. On Sunday, we'll see our last day of below normal temperatures for at least the next week. Upper level ridging will start to move over the area from the west on Monday and surface winds will switch back to the south. By Tuesday and Wednesday, upper ridging will be situated over the area. Surface winds will be breezy from the southwest on Tuesday, allowing for downsloping and additional warming. On Wednesday, the dryline looks push through our area, bringing breezy west winds for much of our forecast area. As a result, temperatures will likely reach the hottest they've been so far this year. The NBM has medium to high chances (50-90%) of reaching or exceeding 100 degrees for both Tuesday and Wednesday for much of the area (lowest chances in Big Country). The record highs for Tuesday have the potential to be tied or broken (Abilene record:100 San Angelo record:102). However, the record highs for Wednesday look to be a bit too far out of reach (Abilene record:105 San Angelo record:108). The upper ridging will start to slide off to the east on Thursday and the thermal ridge will weaken slightly. Temperatures will remain a few degrees cooler than Tuesday and Wednesday for the end of the work week, but will still be well above normal for this time of the year. && .AVIATION...
