Updated at 624 PM CDT Mon Oct 27 2025 - A cold front comes sweeping in Tuesday morning, yielding breezy winds Tuesday and below-normal temperatures through mid-week. - Sub-freezing temperatures expected Wednesday and Thursday morning across the northern Permian Basin (including northern Lea County) and higher elevations. && .SHORT TERM... (This afternoon through Tuesday night) Issued at 200 PM CDT Mon Oct 27 2025 After a day of above normal temperatures, cooler weather looks to drop in by tomorrow, with cooler conditions still in the long term period. A shortwave trough sends a cold front down into the Great Plains tonight. Ahead of the front lows tonight settle mainly into the 50s. The cold front is forecast to sweep in from the north Tuesday morning and throughout the day, bringing gusty northerly and northeasterly winds as it does so. The strongest winds are expected within the Guadalupe Mountains, due to gap winds. At the moment, winds look to remain just near High Wind criteria, possibly briefly meeting criteria. However, we shall refrain from issuing a High Wind Warning for now. Highs Tuesday generally top out in the mid 60s to mid 70s. Tuesday night may bring the first freeze to those within our northern counties as temperatures dip into the 30s to 40s. No precipitation is expected to accompany this system. && .LONG TERM... (Wednesday through Sunday) Issued at 200 PM CDT Mon Oct 27 2025 Chilly and breezy conditions will continue into Wednesday especially across eastern portions of the forecast area. High temperatures will climb mostly into the low 60s, but may not get out of the 50s in the higher terrain. Surface high pressure settles close to the area by Thursday morning bringing the coldest night of the fall season so far. Low temperatures could reach freezing or below across a good portion of the Permian Basin and Davis Mountains. Freeze products for the seasons first freeze are likely in the coming day or so. Even if you don't see a freeze that morning, heavy frost is possible almost anywhere given the high amount of ground moisture from last week's rain. Northwest flow aloft remains in place late week into the weekend keeping the area dry. Temperatures will warm back to near normal as the midweek cold airmass shifts east. A weak front will move into the region Saturday, but very little change in weather is expected behind the front. Another cold front is expected early next week bringing cooler temperatures back to the region. We currently see no rain in sight. && .AVIATION...
