FXUS64 KMAF 121113 AFDMAF Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Midland/Odessa TX 513 AM CST Fri Dec 12 2025 ...New AVIATION... .KEY MESSAGES... Updated at 509 AM CST Fri Dec 12 2025 - Above normal temperatures are expected through Saturday before a stronger cold front (briefly) brings much cooler temperatures on Sunday. - Dry conditions persist through the next several days. && .SHORT TERM... (Today through Saturday afternoon) Issued at 136 AM CST Fri Dec 12 2025 Current observations show a weak cold front is approaching the northern Permian Basin. The supporting jet stream is well north of the area over the northern Great Plains so there is little to no cold air behind the front. Therefore highs today will be similar to Thursday reaching about 10 degrees above normal and most locations reaching the 70s. Saturday brings a return of weak southerly flow which pushes up highs slightly a few degrees. Hennig && .LONG TERM... (Saturday night through Thursday) Issued at 136 AM CST Fri Dec 12 2025 An upper low moving across the U.S./Canadian border sends another cold front into the area Saturday night. This front will tap into colder air from out of Canada and will definitely be noticed on Sunday as highs remain in the 40s to low 50s throughout the day. The current forecast has us breaking out of low clouds in the afternoon allowing for some afternoon heating. There are indications though that clouds could hold on through the afternoon which would lower highs by 3 to 5 degrees from the current forecast. Upper ridging quickly moves into the central United States so as fast as the cold air arrives, it leaves again and Monday quickly rebounds back up into the 60s. The jet stream has struggled to move south this year and next week continues this trend with zonal flow and the jet stream north of us keeping the colder air at bay. Temperatures the remainder of next week will be above normal with highs reaching 60s and 70s each day. There is no chance for rain in this forecast period. Hennig && .AVIATION... (12Z TAFS) Issued at 509 AM CST Fri Dec 12 2025 VFR conditions continue the next 24 hours. A cold front moving through the area this morning will shift winds from the northwest and northeast and becoming gusty. && .PRELIMINARY POINT TEMPS/POPS...
