FXUS64 KHUN 121739 AFDHUN Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Huntsville AL 1139 AM CST Fri Dec 12 2025 ...New NEAR TERM, SHORT TERM... .KEY MESSAGES... Updated at 1140 AM CST Fri Dec 12 2025 - Low chances (15-30%) of precipitation return to the forecast Saturday night as a cold front pushes through the area (mainly near and south of the Tennessee River). - Very cold conditions Sunday into Monday with wind chill values in the teens and single digits primarily. Some wind chills Sunday night could drop to around 5 degrees. - An additional system is forecast to bring increased chances of rainfall by middle/end of next week. && .NEAR TERM... (Rest of Today and Tonight) Issued at 1140 AM CST Fri Dec 12 2025 Sunny skies are in place across northern Alabama and southern middle Tennessee this morning. Warm air/moisture advection continues over the area, which is south of a cold front that stretches from Nashville, TN WSW into northeastern Texas. Expect this to continue through the day as the front moves little in the timeframe. Expect an area of cloud cover behind the front to push further southeast into portions of southern middle Tennessee and NW Alabama overnight though as the front moves south of the area. This will bring colder and drier air into the area late tonight. Lows should drop into the low to mid 30s as a result. && .SHORT TERM... (Saturday through Monday) Issued at 1140 AM CST Fri Dec 12 2025 Sunny skies allow highs to climb again to between 55 and 60 degrees, despite cooler start on Saturday. The arctic front further to the northwest moves a bit quicker southeast than previous runs. This may limit the depth of saturation in the atmospheric column and depth of the cloud layer that actually occurs over the area. In most recent forecast soundings, this is layer of saturation is thiner. This saturated layer is mainly around 280K to 285K. Do not see much lift in that layer, so very skeptical of even low PoP (20-30%) during this time. However, kept 20 to 30 PoP in the forecast mainly near and south of the Tennessee River and portions of NE Alabama. Expect most precipitation to push east of the area after 3 AM. Even cloud cover given the isentropic downglide seen in guidance is not very certain, but kept cloudy conditions in place through 6 AM. The truly arctic air pushing into the area behind the front on Sunday and gusty winds will be the primary concerns on Sunday. Highs will be lucky to climb into the upper 20s to around freezing despite sunny skies much of the day. Mixing to 925 mb is seen in most forecast soundings. This would enable wind gusts to reach 20 to 25 mph during the day. Sustained winds of 10 to 15 mph are expected. This will keep wind chill in the teens to single digits all day. && .LONG TERM... (Sunday night through Thursday) Issued at 943 PM CST Thu Dec 11 2025 Bitterly cold conditions will continue Sunday night as temperatures around 20 after dusk, tumble into the low/mid teens for night time lows. Northerly winds at 5-15 mph early in the evening, will diminish below 5 mph in the overnight. For the most part, wind chill or apparent temperatures stay above 5 degrees Sunday night, which is just above our Cold Weather Advisory threshold. Expect a chilly start to the work week. Under sunny skies, high temperatures Monday should rise into the mid 30s to around 40. Light northerly winds should veer to the SE-S at 5-10 mph in the afternoon. Not as cold Monday night with lows in the low/mid 20s and light winds. Conditions will moderate as we go through the mid week, with highs on Tuesday in the mid/upper 40s, Wednesday in the low/mid 50s, and in the lower 60s Thursday. Lows Tue night will range in the low/mid 30s, and in the 40s Wed night. Clouds will also be on the increase Tuesday into Thursday, as a storm system slowly develops to our west. This next system will bring low to medium (20-50%) chances of rain to the area beginning late Wed afternoon and going into Thu. This precipitation should be more stratiform than convective in character, as it will be on the "overrunning" side of the developing system. The moisture upglide was apparent in the 295-300K regions late Wed into Thu. && .AVIATION... (12Z TAFS) Issued at 536 AM CST Fri Dec 12 2025 Gusty WSW winds will develop this morning and persist through the day, gusting to 15-20 kts through the late afternoon. Winds will weaken to under 5 kts or less after sunset, with SCT to BKN decks of cirrus passing overhead through the period. && .HUN WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES... AL...None.
