FXUS64 KBMX 070507 AFDBMX Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Birmingham AL 1207 AM CDT Thu May 7 2026 ...New DISCUSSION, AVIATION... .KEY MESSAGES... Issued at 1205 AM CDT THU MAY 7 2026 - A risk for severe thunderstorms continues near and south of the Highway 80 corridor (Marengo County east to Russell County) through early this morning. Threats include damaging wind gusts, hail, and a tornado or two. - There is a heightened threat of flash flooding through early Thursday morning, focused along and just north/south of the Highway 80 corridor. && .DISCUSSION... (Today through Wednesday) Issued at 1205 AM CDT THU MAY 7 2026 A surface front has moved across most of Central Alabama as of the midnight hour. Showers and thunderstorms will continue to be widespread throughout the night. The primary focus for repeated downpours/flooding and potential severe thunderstorms will be near and south of the Highway 80 corridor through early this morning. High rain rates and training (activity moving over the same areas) will pose a risk for flooding, considering some areas have already racked up several inches of rain (this is at least good in terms of the drought as it was most entrenched across parts of south Alabama). Additionally, forecast soundings/analysis show a weakly unstable but highly sheared/veering wind profile. This setup will support a continued risk for severe thunderstorms with hazards including: damaging wind gusts, hail, and a tornado or two. A series of shortwave troughs will move across the Gulf Coast region this weekend, resulting in spells of showers and a few thunderstorms. The overall pattern isn't too conducive for severe thunderstorms, especially given signals of minimal instability, but we'll keep an eye out for any changes. Otherwise, no temperature extremes are noted over the next seven days. High and low temperatures will be seasonal. 89^GSatterwhite && .AVIATION...
