FXUS64 KAMA 272308 AFDAMA Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Amarillo TX 608 PM CDT Mon Oct 27 2025 ...New AVIATION... .KEY MESSAGES... Issued at 1242 PM CDT Mon Oct 27 2025 -Likely freeze overnight for most of the combined Panhandles Tuesday night and very likely for all of the combined Panhandles on Wednesday night. && .SHORT TERM... (This evening through Tuesday night) Issued at 1242 PM CDT Mon Oct 27 2025 The main H500 trough deepening over the northern Rockies will be the main synoptic feature to watch over the next 24-72 hours. The latest hi-res 12Z model and numerical guidance, as the main low develops from the southward trajection towards the lower Mississippi River valley by late tomorrow night. With that said, most of the precipitation chances as the system moves south later tonight as the low moves equatorward. The western extend of the main lift of precipitation should reach portions of the eastern Panhandles from late tonight into early tomorrow morning. The more impactful weather will be associated with the cold front moving into the region, trailing from the main developing low pressure features further to the east. H850 temps will drop throughout the day tomorrow with values approaching 0C by tomorrow night. Minus the far southeast Texas Panhandle, we have issued a Freeze Watch for the remainder of the combined Panhandles where 32 degrees or colder is a distinct possibility. High temperatures tomorrow will only range in the lower to mid 50s. Behind the front throughout the day, northerly winds sustained between 20-25 mph with higher gusts is also expected. && .LONG TERM... (Wednesday through next Sunday) Issued at 1242 PM CDT Mon Oct 27 2025 A re-surge of cold air is expected to start the long term forecast period. Especially for Wednesday night, all of the Panhandles should experience a growing season end of a freeze with low temperatures Wednesday night ranging from the lower to upper 20s. Dry and slowly warming conditions are expected throughout the remainder of the long term forecast period with highs returning to near average by the weekend as we go into early November. && .AVIATION... (00Z TAFS) Issued at 546 PM CDT Mon Oct 27 2025 VFR conditions will persist until around midnight when either the cold front arrives with low clouds or a bank of fog forms ahead of the cold front at all terminals. The chances for the formation of fog are very low but if it does form it would be during the later evening hours which is several hours ahead of the cold front's low cloud bank. A sharp drop to IFR or worse conditions can be expected with either of these events. Along the cold front itself drizzle to light rain has a low chance of occurring which would make conditions all that much worse. Conditions will sharply improve back to VFR after the passage of the cold front during the mid morning hours. Robust gusty winds will accompany the passage of the front and then persist through the rest of Tuesday. && .AMA WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...
