FXUS64 KAMA 091135 AFDAMA Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Amarillo TX 635 AM CDT Fri May 9 2025 ...New AVIATION... .KEY MESSAGES... Issued at 127 AM CDT Fri May 9 2025 - Showers and thunderstorms will be possible across most of the Texas Panhandle. Although no severe thunderstorms are expected, gusty winds may result from any shower or thunderstorm. - High temperatures in the 80s to low-90s are expected on Tuesday and Wednesday next week. && .SHORT TERM... (Today through Saturday night) Issued at 127 AM CDT Fri May 9 2025 Today, the Panhandles will be on the backside of a somewhat broad upper-level trough across much of the south-central CONUS. Meanwhile, a surface high will be making its way south from the Great Lakes, changing the surface winds from northerly to roughly easterly. A perturbation rotating around the trough is expected to impact the Panhandles this afternoon, and with moisture still in place, there will be a slight chance for showers and thunderstorms across much of the Texas Panhandle. Forecast soundings show a well- mixed boundary layer below mid-level moisture, indicating that some gusty winds may accompany any shower or thunderstorm. Most locations that see rain will see between a trace to 0.05", but locations that have a thunderstorm will have the potential to see between 0.05" to 0.15". Shower and thunderstorm activity will weaken and dissipate after sunset. Saturday looks quiet amid rising heights aloft. High temperatures will be in the 70s across most of the CWA, but some locations in the eastern half of the Oklahoma Panhandle could touch 80 degrees. Vanden Bosch && .LONG TERM... (Sunday through Thursday) Issued at 127 AM CDT Fri May 9 2025 Early next week will feature a cut-off upper-level trough over the Southern US, ridging across the Upper Midwest, and a digging western trough. Modest low-level moisture return will be possible on Monday but still looks too dry to support appreciable precipitation chances. Upper-level ridging is favored to develop across the region on Tuesday ahead of the digging western trough with a surface low developing in eastern Colorado. Breezy westerly winds are favored across the Panhandles leading to highs in the upper-80s to low-90s on Tuesday and 80s on Wednesday as a Pacific front moves through. The west trough is favored to eject into the Upper Midwest on Thursday as the Panhandles continue to dry out but return to seasonable temperatures. Additional western troughing will be possible Friday and into the weekend, but at this point there is a wide range of possibilities regarding the quality of moisture return.
