FXUS64 KAMA 070505 AFDAMA Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Amarillo TX 1205 AM CDT Thu May 7 2026 ...New KEY MESSAGES, SHORT TERM, LONG TERM... .KEY MESSAGES... Issued at 1203 AM CDT Thu May 7 2026 -Frost and freeze conditions are forecasted for the majority of the combined Panhandles tonight, other than the southeastern Texas Panhandle. -Rain showers are expected to impact the western and central combined Panhandles this evening into the overnight. && .SHORT TERM... (Today through Friday night) Issued at 1203 AM CDT Thu May 7 2026 Light precipitation will likely linger in the western and central Panhandles tonight, before dissipating as it moves toward the eastern combined Panhandles. After this precipitation dissipates, skies are expected to clear and temperatures will fall. Strong northerly winds ushering in cold air advection will allow temperatures to reach freezing for most of the combined Panhandles, however, not including the far southeastern CWA where cloud cover may linger. After these cold conditions through the early morning hours on Thursday, winds will shift out of the west, warming temperatures back up and bringing drier air to the Panhandles. By Friday, seasonably warm temperatures and dry conditions will return. && .LONG TERM... (Saturday through Wednesday) Issued at 1203 AM CDT Thu May 7 2026 High temperatures are expected to persist above seasonal averages through the weekend into early next week. High temperatures will rebound into high 70's to high 80's across the Panhandles on Friday, with cooler highs in the northwestern CWA. Saturday will be more of the same, widespread upper 80's to low 90's for high temperatures with possible fire weather conditions returning with relative humidities in the teens over most of the CWA. A frontal passage on Saturday night into Sunday will temper high temperatures down to the high-70's o low 80's. However, it will not last long as the beginning of next week we see the potential for record breaking high temperatures across the Panhandles from Mon-Wed. && .AVIATION... (00Z TAFS) Issued at 633 PM CDT Wed May 6 2026 As of early this evening, latest radar was seeing showers push in across the Western Panhandles with expectation to see some impacts to KDHT and KGUY around sunset. These impacts will likely be in the form of light to moderate rain showers that will see visibility and CIGs drop to around MVFR levels with a potential to have brief periods of IFR CIGs as we get later in the night. These conditions will begin to break down and return to VFR levels after midnight with most CAMs seeing some very dry and cold air force storms to move southeast during the night and overnight period. As for KAMA, a stall boundary to our south has forces some showers to develop much further south than expected, but there is still uncertainty if these showers will actually make it to KAMA proper. Instead impacts are more likely once the main band pushes southeast later tonight. && .AMA WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES... TX...Freeze Warning until 9 AM CDT this morning for TXZ001>004-006.
