FXUS64 KAMA 051136 AFDAMA Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Amarillo TX 536 AM CST Thu Nov 5 2026 ...New AVIATION... .KEY MESSAGES... Issued at 1026 PM CST Wed Nov 4 2026 - Morning showers are likely across the panhandles - Cool fall temperatures today and Friday with high's in the 50s moderating into the mid 60s early next week. - Low probability of showers Saturday across the southern portion of the CWA. && .SHORT TERM... (Tonight through Friday night) Issued at 1026 PM CST Wed Nov 4 2026 Compact mid level low moving across southern CO with showers and a few thunderstorms ahead of it. Precip is occurring in the left front quad of a west to east oriented 70kt mid level jet streak from AZ into west Texas. Minimal instability suggests only occasional chances of thunder at best overnight. Currently all the lightning is occurring in far southeast CO and far southwest KS, to the north of our area. This feature will continue to move quickly through the area Thursday morning with short wave ridging moving in by Thursday evening. RRFS model wants to show some lingering light showers into the central panhandles Thursday morning... even as far south as Amarillo. The best chance for precip will be across the OK panhandle and the far northeastern corner of the TX panhandle through about mid day. As the surface low moves by winds will switch to the north and be gusty. This cold advection may actually knock the temps down by a couple of degrees from late morning into the early afternoon. Clouds will clear from west to east by late afternoon and that might give us an hour or two to see high temps climb by a couple of degrees. Right now we are thinking low 50's over most of the area but the majority of the day will be upper 40s to around 50 until the cloud cover clears. && .LONG TERM... (Saturday through next Wednesday) Issued at 1026 PM CST Wed Nov 4 2026 The next mid level trough will take shape over the southwestern U.S. Saturday as a low digs into southeast AZ. There is a low chance of seeing some light showers across the southern portions of the CWA Saturday afternoon however present indications are that these showers should be light and on a downward trend as they come into our area. After that system moves by to the south of us we should start to see a warming trend into the early portion of next week with highs getting into the mid 60s. With a benign pattern in place it is looking quiet and dry through the early to middle portions of next week. && .AVIATION... (12Z TAFS) Issued at 521 AM CST Thu Nov 5 2026 MVFR conditions are settling into all sites this morning as a cold front progresses through the area. Strong, northerly winds will also be left in the wake of this passing front. Gust up to 35 kts are possible at all sites. Later this afternoon, skies should clear out at all terminals and winds should eventually die down by the evening. Rain is expected for a brief period of time at KGUY later this morning, but it is not expected to be impactful to the terminal. Rangel && .AMA WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES... TX...None.
