FXUS63 KSGF 121126 AFDSGF Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Springfield MO 526 AM CST Fri Dec 12 2025 .KEY MESSAGES... - Fog over portions of central Missouri this morning. - Much colder conditions late Saturday into early Monday. Coldest time period is Saturday night into Sunday with minimum wind chill values of -8F to 5F (coldest over central Missouri). - Dry through most of the period, with a warm-up starting Monday. && .SHORT TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/... Issued at 107 AM CST Fri Dec 12 2025 Behind a cold front moving south through the region this morning, look for fog potential over portions of central MO this morning. If fog is dense, which could occur but is not in the current forecast, some freezing fog is possible given temperatures around 31. However, since this would occur after sunrise (most likely in the 7am-11am time range), no road impacts would be expected even in the worst case scenario. Cloud cover will be most persistent in areas N and E of Springfield today, resulting in cooler high temperatures in the mid 30s. Elsewhere, low to mid 40s for highs is forecast. For tonight, look for lows in the mid to upper 20s. && .LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/... Issued at 107 AM CST Fri Dec 12 2025 Main stories in the long term are much colder conditions late Saturday into early Monday and a big warmup for much or all of the rest of next week. Starting Saturday, a deep 500mb low over the Great Lakes and a large area of associated cold air will set us up for much colder conditions. Mid-day 850mb temps Saturday will range from around 0C over the N to 4-5C over the S, with surface MaxT values ranging from 32 N to 55 S. By 6pm Saturday, cold air will be surging southward as a 500mb trough and surface high push toward the area. Look for temperatures to drop into the mid teens to mid 20s with wind chills in the teens to single digits by midnight Saturday night. By Sunday morning, look for temperatures ranging from the mid single digits (wind chills around -7F) across central MO to low to mid teens (wind chills around 0F) over southern and southwestern portions of the area. Advisory criteria for cold conditions is -10F roughly north of Hwy 60 and -5F along/south of Hwy 60. The forecast does not drop wind chills that low and LREF probabilities for advisory level wind chills are generally less than 15%. So it appears unlikely that an advisory will be needed Saturday night into Sunday morning. High temperatures Sunday are forecast to be in the 20s with light winds and clearing skies. The Great Lakes system will shift quickly east Sunday and Sunday night, with rapidly rising heights and a much warmer airmass over the central and western CONUS behind it. Look for one cooler night Sunday night with lows in the teens and wind chills in the single digits to low teens. Monday will warm to very near normal temperatures with forecast highs in the low to mid 40s. Tuesday highs in the 50s and Wednesday/Thursday are around 60, with relatively small NBM interquartile spreads. There is a 15-25% chance of rain over the eastern CWA on Thursday, but confidence is very low. && .AVIATION /12Z TAFS THROUGH 12Z SATURDAY/... Issued at 520 AM CST Fri Dec 12 2025 Moisture below an inversion is expected to bring brief MVFR ceilings to KSGF and KJLN late this morning, although both sites will be near the edge of the lower cloud deck resulting in spatial variability and less confidence in exact details. Lowered clouds should not make it as far south at KBBG. Otherwise, VFR conditions are then expected this afternoon through tonight. && .SGF WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES... KS...None.
