FXUS62 KKEY 090232 AFDKEY Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Key West FL 1032 PM EDT Thu May 8 2025 ...New DISCUSSION, MARINE, AVIATION... .DISCUSSION... Issued at 1030 PM EDT Thu May 8 2025 It has been a calm evening for the Florida Keys. However, we learned over the last few hours of a wildfire burning along the 18 mile stretch to the south of Florida City. This has resulted in road closures for the time being. We recommend staying in tune to the latest updates and to the emergency managers. It is very dry out there and is expected to continue for at least another day with a wetter period upon us. KBYX radar has not detected any shower activity through the late afternoon and evening. GOES East Nighttime Microphysics shows mostly clear skies across the Keys with some high level cirrus streaming from west to east. Also, we can see the hot-spot on the microphysics imagery this evening as a dark purple spot south of Florida City on the mainland. Temperatures along the Island Chain are near 80 degrees with dew points near 70 degrees. An Atlantic ridge remains in place across the western North Atlantic and over Florida. This is leading to marine platforms around the Keys observing east to southeast breezes near 10 knots and Island Chain communities observing near 10 mph. .SHORT TERM FORECAST.. The 00z evening sounding shows a dry profile through much of the atmospheric column meaning no appreciable rain is expected overnight. There are barely any clouds out there and until we can start to moisten up the air enough to get more in the way of clouds, rain will be tough to come by. We do expect this to change over the weekend and heading into earlier next week. See previous area forecast discussion for more info. The wind profile remains mostly due east near 10 knots and usually you would like to see some veering to the winds to help support showers. The PWAT value measured is drier than last evening coming in at 1.09 inches which is halfway between the 10th and 25th percentile for the date. Overall, a dry night is on tap with no changes to the ongoing forecast needed. && .MARINE... Issued at 1030 PM EDT Thu May 8 2025 There are currently no watches, warnings, or advisories in effect across the Florida Keys coastal waters. From synopsis, an Atlantic ridge axis transecting the Florida Peninsula will shift southeastward over the next two days, as troughing develops over the Southeast. East to southeasterly breezes will tend to peak in the late evening through early morning hours and lull during the afternoons. A surface low will develop in the central Gulf this weekend, bringing freshening breezes and increasing chances for showers and thunderstorms, with unsettled weather lasting through early next week. && .AVIATION... (00Z TAFS) Issued at 1030 PM EDT Thu May 8 2025 VFR conditions are expected to prevail at both EYW and MTH terminals through the TAF period. Near surface winds are expected to remain out of the east to southeast near 10 knots through the period. && .PRELIMINARY POINT TEMPS/POPS...
